I bought the first edition and loved it. It explained Lean well and had some good guidelines for implementation. I studied it and could see things at my current company and at past companies that would be significant improvements, even without a full implementation. But the second edition is a disappointment. I read Part I with three chapters and probably won’t continue. It seems likely to me that people took his first edition, used it, and failed, and then complained to him that Lean doesn’t work. His tone in the preface and the first three chapters is one that if you don’t know what you are doing, then don’t even try. You’re incompetent to understand this and you will fail! He says that an expert(sensei) is necessary, and implies that without a sensei, failure is a certainty. I don’t need a condescending attitude shaking its finger at me for the remaining 371 pages. In one section he emphasizes “respect for people” is one of the pillars of Lean. As someone who was willing to learn, I wasn’t feeling that respect from him. I am a machinist and have worked on the shop floor for 25 years. I’ve had too many bosses who didn’t respect me and what I could do. There is a real divide between the shop floor and management and engineers. We are viewed by them as irresponsible and apathetic, and we in turn view them as arrogant and condescending. The author established the tone of this book in the first 35 pages with arrogance and condescension. I get enough of that nonsense 45 hours a week. Everyone at a company has an important function to perform, from the lowly machine operator to the president. Recognizing this simple little fact is one of the first steps toward the necessary culture change. To anyone wanting to read this book, good luck. I’m sure it has good content later on and will probably be a joy to read and digest for “staff” who love to organize and outline on paper, but never get their hands dirty, (literally, not metaphorically.)

I recently purchased and read this splendid book - finding it very useful on a number of levels: Firstly, it provides a comprehensive introduction to Lean philosophy and systems. Secondly, it excellently demonstrates Lean's usefulness through the case studies it presents. Finally, it is a great guide on the path to Lean implementation, taking care also to emphasize what needs to be in place before embarking on this process - and not least in which domains Lean principles can be successfully applied, and where they cannot. In short it combines all the relevant aspects of Lean in one concise volume, which is very well written: succinct, matter of fact, clear, direct, and to the point. This is truly a "how to" book that will of great value to you if you are about to set sail on a Lean journey - taking you there one step at a time.I would certainly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Lean; whether you want to learn about Lean philosophy, concepts and tools, or you're looking for examples of the applicability and capability of Lean initiatives, or if you'd like knowledge about the prerequisites and potential pitfalls of Lean implementation.Even seasoned practitioners of Lean may have something to learn from the straightforward and easy-to-understand way in which the entire concept is presented. This is something which can surely be of value when introducing the subject to new initiates.

Having read the "Lean Manufacturing in the Oil Refinery" by Lonnie Wilson and Jason Farley, the article published by BridgeGap Consulting Syndicate in June 2010, it was clear that this book (referenced in the above article) could be able to provide deeper insight into corporate transformation process applicable in this traditionally CAPEX-orientated environment. The applicability of Lean philosophy to continuous industrial processes (as opposed to discrete ones) has been disputed and doubted by oil and gas industry professionals - Lonnie Wilson shows and proves that there is no rational reason for that. I needed this solid footing in pursuing Lean initiatives in oil refinery and this book excellently serves this purpose.

I have used the 1st edition as the guide to making our transformation into Lean Manufacturing since 2010. Lonnie’s 2nd Edition expands nicely on every step to Implementation. With real life examples Lonnie provides the clarity everyone can use to guide them on a step by step process to the Cultural Changes that, if followed, will set them up for success.

How to Implement Lean Manufacturing by Lonnie Wilson is a masterpiece on continuous improvment. Lonnie covers this subject by hitting all significant areas of lean and ties it to real life situations where he has made a tremendous impact as a consultant. The book is very well written and organized. Each chapter leaves you with a thirst for the next chapter. I consider this book to be the "number one" book I have read on lean. I am a lean consultant and University of Minnesota Lean Manufacturing instructor who holds seven lean/six sigma certifications and has practiced manufacturing & design engineering for over 25 years. This book definitely earns an "A+".Jim McCarthy - Lean Master & Master Black Belt

Lonnie Wilson has done a surpurb job of taking the very broad subject of Lean Manufacturing and in twenty chapters provided not only the what but the how too of Lean Manufacturing along with pitfalls to avoid. I really enjoyed the three chapters of case studies that bring home the points of the book. This book is not only a great read for the newly initiated practitioners of Lean but also for those already involved in the daily implementations. If your wondering if your company is ready to move down the Lean path, Lonnie's Five Tests of Management Commitment to Lean Manufacturing, The Ten Most Common Reasons Lean Initiatives Fail, and The Five Precursors to Implementing a Lean Initiative will certainly provide insight as to what needs to be done before you head down the path. Lonnie this is a great read and I hope it is not your last.Thom LongcoreSr. Productivity ManagerWoodbridge Foam Corp.
