I have to admit -- I was one of those people who avoided looking at "Those People." I didn't know what to say to them. I didn't know if I should smile at them or cry because of their situation.After reading Richard's book and serving breakfast with him, my eyes have been opened wide."Those People" are everyday people. They are just like you and me. Most importantly, they are human beings. They have feelings. They have needs and wants.Richard's book is a must-read. It was definitely a page-turner for me.
It’s obvious that the author is both well versed in the causes of homelessness and the breadth of characters that find themselves there. His years of experience relating to those living in dire circumstance gives him a unique perspective on our generalized assumptions. He has divided the book into chapters that identify the character required to live without a home. Whether you believe that homelessness is a systemic outcome of a broken social system, or the personal decision or consequence of the broken, you are guaranteed to walk away both convicted and committed to eye contact with a group of people you’ve been avoiding for a long time.
“You have frequent enough encounters with panhandlers, and you have a genuine interest about knowing what to do. So thank you for your concern. My suggestion is that if you are reading this, you now have the responsibility to have a plan.“Richard Bahr offers such plans that have developed from decades of loving God and loving people, particularly “the least of theseâ€.
If you’re curious about homeless people, wondering how to best help, and want to stretch yourself in the area of compassion, I highly recommend this book. Bahr writes first hand accounts and observations of working with and befriending the homeless, bringing humanity, dignity, and understanding to a population in our society that is often misunderstood. Inspiring and thought-provoking, this book builds a much needed bridge of compassion by way of better understanding those who are experiencing homelessness.
