From the Back Cover

She was the loneliest puppy in the litter—a deaf and partially blind albino Great Dane. She had huge, sky blue eyes. And when Dan Dye reached for her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know I'm the one. Now get me outta here!

And yes a bite of bittersweet too.Sometimes it takes a giant dog to love a heart as huge as Mark's. Emphasis on sometimes.Uplifting story of rags to riches with tremendous hard work, diligence and vision of excellence, neatly tucked in-between the lines. All is humbly credited to a velvet muse, Gracie the Great Dane.Few people may realize the challenge of coping with a born deaf canine, but intrepid Mark doesn't hesitate. This was a great Christmas read. It is a timely inspiration and testament to how rescuing a less than perfect puppy brings untold rewards. The blessings far outweigh the downfalls. In the end the author achieves something I've always wanted to do, work with my rescues.Don't miss the refreshing descriptors, "tail up like an antenna" or 'ear like sheets on a line' - forgive my paraphrasing.Amazon charged my Kindle a $1.99. What a hoot! What a great value for a wonderful read.PS: For Mark, A Gracie sized hug to you. You are in good company with millions of pet lovers world wide. Our rescued kindreds send you tribute for championing their need.

I purchased this book several months ago and put off reading it. I finally got to it, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Since Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff are not known for their writing abilities and not really professional authors, I wasn't expecting it to be particularly good, but I was wrong. It was very well written and very funny and entertaining up until the last few pages when Dan lost his beloved Gracie. But, this is a story of serendipity---when you find something wonderful that you weren't looking for. Dan never in his wildest dreams thought he and his partner Mark would stumble on a wildly successful business when he brought Gracie home as a puppy. Because she was a picky eater, her veterinarian suggested to Dan that he start cooking her food for her. Dan didn't even know how to cook, but because of his love for Gracie, he decided to give it a shot. The rest is history, but its a history I never wanted to end.

I'm fairly sure I've heard part of the story before for the origin of Three Dog Bakery - they were on Oprah after all - but not enough to really remember details. It's a wonderful story about a man - having lost a dog companion months earlier - gets talked into just going to look at a great dane puppy that's deaf...that will be put down by the breeder in a few days. Most of us who've owned dogs, loved dogs, shared our lives with dogs know that this really only means one thing - the guy was going home with a deaf great dane puppy. And surprise, surprise he does. It's a really nice look at how a dog can come in to our lives and change it for the better. Dan Dye says that he originally thought that he saved Gracie (the dog) when in fact Gracie saved him. I think thats how things work in our lives sometimes - we think we're performing some act of service when in fact it's actually reversed.Wonderful book. Need tissues (of course) and a heart big enough to embrace loving a great dane puppy!

I have to admit: the reason I picked up this book was the title. I have a rescue dog named Gracie and it instantly caught my attention. As I read this book I was reminded of the joys and heartaches of dog ownership. I have two dogs and both have had some scary health issues that I could not help them overcome. It amazed me to see Gracie's strength and love. Even when she struggled with anorexia, her will to live won out. It also reminded me that our pets can sometimes lead us and help us to find our calling. I laughed out loud in almost every chapter and cried (remembering my own loss) when I got to the end. Definitely worth the money and a joy to read.

“Amazing Gracie” is a combination of raucous good humor and deep emotion. Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff loved their dogs--and especially deaf Gracie--as if the three canines were cherished family members, to be loved and respected for their temperamental quirks as well as their finer qualities.Every doggie exploit or mishap is somehow turned into a joke; the only really sad moments are when Gracie reaches the end of her doggie life and has to be put down. I’m not a dog owner, but I had to reach for my handkerchief when that chapter came. This is a delightful story, a wonderful read, and it is one of the few animal books that I may read again.

Funny, uplifting and bittersweet story of an amazing dog. Now days, special needs dogs are not such an anomaly and you can find resources online and, in some cases, local trainers who can teach a type of "sign language" (hand signals) to use with deaf dogs. It's amazing that these two guys managed so well on their own with not only a deaf dog but, an ENORMOUS deaf dog. That's a lot to deal with. And they make delicious dog cookies too. I used to feed my dogs the sandwich cookies all the time. We used them exclusively to bribe our dog Emily into getting in the tub for bath time.

I knew that I would enjoy this book just by one look at the cover. I love dogs, dog stories, dog movies, in fact, all things doggy. Gracie's story reminded me of the love, comfort, and joy that my girls have given me. I knew I would cry at the inevitable ending. I always do. But, after my cry, and cuddles and face-licking from my canine children, I again rejoice in the lives I have had the privilege of sharing. My living children are Molly, Penny and Booboo (real name Zorro) and each have a story, as do my other Angels Sasha, Tasha, and Honey. I thank Dan and Mark for sharing Gracie's story with us, and encourage everyone to read it. Incidentally, we love Three Dog Bakery treats! Thanks again.
