As a man with Scottish blood myself (and someone who has been there many times), the tales that Malky spins about his homeland feel as close as next door, yet illustrate the wonderful quirks that make Scotland the special place that it is. Malky, a former police officer, has such a rich knowledge of the customs, history, and culture that one wonders what would be possible if he ran for political office...knowing his humility after reading his books, though, such is the kind of thing Malky is too modest to entertain.To be fair, his wit and skill in jostling laughs from even the most uncomfortable of topics probably disqualifies him from ever being a politician: people actually laugh at Malky's humor because he's FUNNY. If you're a fan of the Dave Berry school of chuckle-out-loud rapid fire reading, you'll feel at home with Malky!Highly recommended... regardless of your actual intent to ever visit Scotland.Though after reading, you'll WANT to. Thank Malky for that!
I am not planning a trip to Scotland soon, and so I read this as an armchair traveler. Malky tells good stories, and you do get a feel for what it would be like to motor around Scotland and stop in some of the off-the-beaten path places. But I stopped before I got to the end, because a little too much of it starts to sound like family reminiscences.
Mr. McEwens enthusiasm and love of Scotland shines on each page. I am anxiously awaiting his next book.I only have two suggestions: 1. Pronouniation key would be greatly appreciated . 2. Photographs would take this over the next level, to the one above that!
