While I read the intro pages on the internet and thought it sounded like it would be really good, those pages were the end of the helpful. Now, if you're someone who doesn't write and is afraid of writing then this might be helpful. If like me, you're trying to figure out what to write and how to write it, then look elsewhere.

Ariane Goodwin's Writing the Artist Statement lacks any substance on how to actually write an artist statement. True, she tells readers what an artist statement isn't. It isn't a resume. It isn't a biography. It certainly isn't a critique. But she doesn't tell the artist how to write an artist statement until the second to the last page, pg. 141 where she shows an example from her friend and fellow artist Lydia Grey her artist statement:Sometimes between waking and sleeping a dream image appears. Sometimes a powerful feeling rises up and pushes out of me. Like Persephone, I have been tugged into the emotional underworld. Like Daphne, I've run from the rational. Shaping these clay stories lets me honor my deepest feelings.I want my pots to be touched. I want their stories to come to life, to whisper revelations to the hands that hold them. I make these pots by throwing clay on the wheel, pushing the clay in and out with my fingers, and hand building. I finish them with a thin skin of non-toxic glaze or terra sigillata, some I smoke fire in a pit in my back yard.If I had lived 5,000 years ago, inbetween gathering food and minding the baby, I would have shaped clay. I can imagine somebody digging up one of my pots in 2,000 years, turning it around in their hands and wondering, who made this? And why? That was it. One example. In 142 short pages, and literally hundreds of statements she could have chosen from, Goodwin only cited one artist statement to aspiring artists of what the prototypical artist statement should be. The rest of the book was mindless rubbish, with Godwin filling an entire page with a whole sentence and then moving onto the next page and then filling that page up with one sentence and so on. For instance, pages 17-25 are nothing but one sentence pages. Page seventeen states, "Because an artist statement affirms what you do, and by extension affirms you. And none of us can ever have too much affirmation." Page 18, "Because an artist statement calls out for you to recognize the true faces of your deepest self: truth, beauty and goodness." Page 20, "Because an artist statement strengthens the relationship you have with your work." Why write an artist statement? "Because," as she points out in page 21, "an artist statement enriches the connection between the artist and the art." But what, exactly, is an artist statement? Goodwin failed to explain it in this short book of hers. The rest of it is motivational writing exercises meant to try to get artists to have a deeper connection with their art. While that's all fine and dandy, it doesn't tell me how to write an artist statement. Goodwin has admitted that most gallery dealers do not put much stock in artist statements. But that doesn't excuse her from writing what was a sub-par book. I found this book to be deeply disappointing, lacking any depth, full of poetic prose but short of any substance.

Do you really need an artist's statement? Some would argue (and I've been there) that one's work should stand on its own and besides, don't most artist's staements turn you off? Ariane Goodwin explains not only the several unexpected reasons you might need one, but also the how - what actually goes into one, and what should not be included...It's not all about psuedo-intellectual pretentious writing that no one can understand.Ariane not only understands the artist, but also writing. Along with information about the what and why, she supplies the reader with creative excercises that can be applied to any type of writing. And despite what your preconceived notions about the excercises are, do them! Presented in a logical order, they get you to where you need to go quickly and effectively. I was astounded by the results. The book's format and design is a pleasure, one liner pages and all, making the information all the more accessible and non-threatening. Loved this book, and the first draft of my artist's statement to boot. Recommend highly!

This book really helped me and got me the think about my work and writing about my work differently. You have to trust the author and just go though the silly exercises though...almost like taking a class. For the price...this book is a no brainer if you are serious about your art career.

One of the best books I've read on the subject of artist's statements. Written for the artist who's just starting out as well as the more seasoned artist who is looking for a fresher approach to writing meaningful words about themselves and their personal relationship with their work.

This book is a must for learning how to write an artists statement, so many great ideas. My art coach borrowed mine, now I need to get another one.

It did actually make me write, so pretty good!

One of the most helpful books about writing that I have read. The exercises are well thought out and effective. The writing is engaging and really gets me excited about writing my artist's statement.
