"Winner of a 2015 Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Award""One of Buffalo News’ 10 Rare and Wonderful Books for Holiday Giving 2015""Selected for Cosmos Magazine’s Holiday Science Reading list 2015""One of Denver Life Magazine’s 8 Books for Everyone on Your Holiday List""Engaging the text side by side with the artwork yields a myriad of interesting tonal effects in both the words and the pictures. It's an entirely different approach to the notion of illustration. . . . This book succeeds in scratching the itch many admirers of Carroll and Dalí have felt for too long."---Megan Volpert, PopMatters, "[The drawings were] originally printed alongside the rise of 1960s psychedelia, we can return to examine the curious collaboration between one of the most prolific 20th-century dreamers and one of the 19th-century's most influential fantasies."---Allison Meier, Hyperallergic"The hardcover book as a physical object has much to recommend it. Beautifully designed with high-quality paper, it is nonetheless inexpensive enough that parents shouldn't panic at the prospect of thumbprints and spills if they read or give it to their children. A great gift for children, children-at-heart, and lovers of timeless culture, it will earn a proud place by the bedside, on the bookshelf, or on the coffee table right beside the tiny golden key to the garden of your imagination."---Jon Sobel, Blogcritics.org, "Dali's illustrations have a colourful force of their own. Carroll's Alice anticipated the Surrealist wonderland: dreams and paradoxes, puns and psychoanalysis, distortions of space and time."---Dominic Green, Standpoint"[This] is the copy of Alice's Adventures you keep after having given all the other celebratory variants away . . . it comes with two very astute and well-illustrated introductions. . . . It is, as the introductions state, as both creators would like to see it--two weird and/or wonderful minds with much in common, harmonizing across the centuries to result in this very handsome modern edition."---John Lloyd, The Bookbag"The introduction by Burstein . . . and Thomas Banchoff provides a valuable grounding in [Dalí's] interests and obsessions at the time the gouaches were created." From the Back Cover

"Until now, the astounding illustrations drawn by Salvador Dalí for a deluxe limited edition and expensive version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were out of reach for most book lovers. This book fulfills the dreams of many who want to have their own copies of these beautiful works, with the addition of an erudite introduction to Carroll and Dalí by Mark Burstein and Thomas Banchoff."--Edward Wakeling, author of Lewis Carroll: The Man and His Circle"To those of us brought up on John Tenniel's iconic illustrations for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, it seems unbelievable that anyone else would dare to attempt the task. Yet hundreds have done so, though none is as distinguished and few as imaginative as Salvador Dalí. This attractive 150th anniversary edition, which describes Dalí's mathematical interests and presents his illustrations (previously published only in a rare limited edition), is greatly to be welcomed."--Robin Wilson, author of Lewis Carroll in Numberland"How appropriate for this volume to appear as part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Burstein and Banchoff give us insights into the genius of both Carroll and Dalí, and then we have Dalí's illustrations, which are far distant from any suggestion of realism. Altogether, it is a remarkable voyage through Wonderland on a new plane--an enlightening and pleasurable adventure."--Morton N. Cohen, author of Lewis Carroll: A Biography"All in all a marvelous book printed on thick paper. This anniversary edition will be an irresistible temptation to any bibliophile."--A. Bultheel

The classic story with Dali's powerful artistic contributions. My fiancee and I visited an Alice in Wonderland exhibit at a museum and found out about the original version of this book. We pre-ordered this special edition later the same day and waited for it with baited breath. The book is not for everyone, just as Dali is not for everyone, but we love it. My only complaint is the size of the book. When i originally ordered the book, I was expecting a large coffee table volume that would stand out in the room. To my chagrin, the book is actually about the size of a hardcover novel. Otherwise it's fantastic. Great print, binding, and paper quality, and the color paintings really stand out on the page.

We ordered the Alice in Wonderland with the green leather cover. I thought it was difficult to tell which reviews went with which versions. I'm really glad we grabbed this version, the cover (despite the ugly green color) is quite beautiful with embossed lettering and shiny red roses and border. The edge of the pages are golden, there is a red ribbon for marking your page. All of the original artwork is presented, and the page layouts are perfect. The front and back cover have a vivid full color painting of the tea party. If you are looking for a high quality version of the book, I couldn't recommend this one more. The size is medium. It is half way between the size of a paperback and a hard cover text book.

This review is for the RED "hardcover" and I will post pictures because when I read reviews prior to purchase I was super confused and had no idea which book the reviews were about.First, the cover is gorgeous but it's not "hardcover" (see photo). It's a lovely soft cover, covered with leather which is partially embossed; the gold lettering appears to be painted on. The back cover is just as well made and embossed as well.Second, this is the full version of both stories, not an "abridged" version. The generous illustrations are beautifully done.I can't believe this book is only $10!I hope my review helps!

I had a difficult time determing which version was being reviewed in many of these reviews, so I am specifically reviewing the version that is illustrated by Anna Bond. This is a great version to use with younger kids- it has larger print and illustrations on almost every page. If you want to purchase accompanying audio to listen with, just buy the unabridged version and it should be a match.

This is incredible! Absolutely beautiful.. Extended my expectations!! I have seriously never seen a more beautiful book! The detail is awesome and even the story itself is from the original Lewis Carroll version. Not only is each page a beautiful pop up.. But each page has mini fold out pages with more pop up artwork. This will be a keepsake for our family. SO glad I bought this and will look at buying others!

I loathe when Amazon lumps the reviews of different books together so this is for the hardcover version illustrated by Charles Santore. The cover is beautiful with an older looking cover and the color illustration of Alice falling. The sketches throughout the book are in black and white. The pages are thick and sturdy but cut roughly on the sides. The font is a great size and spacing and on a very white background. I hate when they use a small print and tight spacing on older books. The sketches are beautifully done and do a wonderful job of bringing Alice and the story to life. They do pale in comparison to the illustrated versions but unfortunately that edition is abridged. I had never read the story before so I was not aware of the differences between Alice’s Adventures Underground and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but there are many. This book for example does not have the chapter on the Mad Tea Party. That and other parts would be added in to the story so if that’s the version you are interested in than this is not the version for you.

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

This review is specifically for the penguin hardcover cloth-bound classics edition (white with pink flamingos)!Naturally, the tale of Alice in Wonderland (told in two books; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) is definitely a fun, unique tale that appeals to children and adults alike, so of course I wanted to own a quality copy of it! I like how this edition contains both books and is hardcover with a simple cover design that looks timeless and elegant on my bookshelf. The book is full of useful notes and information in edition to having the tale; plus it contains the classic illustrations too! The paper is very high quality, the printing very attractive, and overall it was well worth the $10 I spent on it. I thought it was such an attractive edition that I bought one for my sister, who is a collector of the various editions of this tale. I've no complaints except that I don't really care for how rough the fabric is; it's not very nice to hold in your bare hands in my opinion, and it makes a sound when it's placed on the shelf next to other cloth-bound hardcovers from the penguin classics series, so those are two things to keep in mind. I personally would have preferred either a softer fabric or for the books to have been bound in hard-backed pleather.
