While the most notable feature of the uniform of the U.S. Army was, in fact, its regulation dark blue color, the Confederates had much more variation, with uniforms ranging from the familiar gray to "butternut." The many styles and colors worn by the South are presented in a state-by-state survey. The North is covered in similar depth, detailing the uniforms and equipment of the regular army, including infantry, cavalry, and artillery. This book covers both US and CSA uniforms from the Generals all the way down to the lowliest recruit! The color photos and the black and white photos are a real plus. A great deal of research went into compiling the massive (this is not a light book!) amount of information!Well worth the money and the time it will take one to absorb the information. A great reference book!
As far as detailed information goes, there isn't much here I didn't already have in Arms & Equipment of the Civil War by Coggins. There are a lot of photos, but they are mostly black & white historic shots. There are a few nice color illustrations, could be a lot more. And a few shots showing groups of accessories, which could be identified better. Not an exhaustive research reference, but ok for basic understanding.
This book gives a pretty thorough history and explanation of the various uniforms of the Civil War, from production to distribution to use. Lots of great vintage and modern photographs, as well as illustrations, to help with documentation by enthusiasts or reenactors, with even a state-by-state breakdown in uniform styles, colors, and availability. A very interesting read, and makes a handy reference guide.
Good book, found good info, great reference guide and a good book to have in any historians collection.
A good guide for those that are interested in re-enactments. Limited color plates will not be of much help to the wargamer, however the history of the CSA uniforms is rather interesting.
Excellent resource
Excellent overview of uniforms and equipment of the Civil War. Book is broken into Union Epuipment and Confederate Epuipment and further subdivided into States. Especially notable are the many photos and color plates throughout the book.
Not exactly what I had in mind but none the less a neat book with alot of great information. Nothing further to add. Thank you.
