Review

If there were a "Watchman" to protect us from danger, he would be shaking his rattle vigorously right now. We are in danger of becoming extinct, for the signs of the collapse of our civilization are obvious, according to Rebecca Costa's excellent and thought provoking new book, The Watchman's Rattle. The theme for The Watchman's Rattle can be summed up in the story of the sophisticated and scientifically developed Mayan society: Unproven beliefs became the substitute for facts. Once this happens, as the practice of beliefs cannot result in real solutions, the inevitability of failure takes place, and disaster is the only outcome. Our inherent hubris about our being as evolved as we can possibly ever be, is another message that one can take from The Watchman's Rattle. If we do not heed the lessons of the past, if we continue to ignore all the warning signs that threaten human existence-such as global recession, powerful pandemic viruses, terrorism, rising crime, climate change, rapid depletion of the earth's resources, nuclear proliferation, and failing educational systems-we are doomed to extinction. However, if we do pay attention, Costa lays out a plan that places us in an excellent position to change a repetitive pattern of decline. This is an excellent book, rich with challenging thoughts as well as perceptive solutions. Costa offers excellent research in this fully developed dissertation on the warning signs and potential solutions to human and global destruction. Highly recommended.―Geri Spieler, New York Journal of Books"The Gulf is drowning in oil, the housing market stumbles along, the Afghanistan conflict nears a decade long...why do all these problems seem so intractable and unstoppable? How did we get to this point of gridlock? Instead of hand-wringing we should all read Rebecca Costa's The Watchman's Rattle and start figuring out how to really solve these messes. Few other books have so clearly and sharply captured how our symptom-obsessed society means we're always looking for the quick-fix and easy cure rather than searching for the deeper, longer lasting solutions. Her analysis of how we got to this point mixes history, biology, economics and much more to paint a picture of a society overwhelmed by tremendous problems, but with her Silicon Valley rationality and novel guide to intuitive thinking, Costa has pointed a way forward for all of us."―Tina Brown, Editor-in-Chief and Founder, The Daily Beast"I am on the side of Rebecca Costa. Let us become realists-in-search-of-a-solution rather than doomsayers."―E. O. Wilson, Two-Time Pulitzer Prize Winner"Problems eventually become too complicated for the average intelligence-in The Watchman's Rattle, Rebecca Costa depicts the challenges this presents."―Dr. James Watson, Nobel Laureate

So, first of all, this is an incredibly easy book to read and flows quite well. In fact, I read the first half so quickly I needed to return and reread the book midway through. Concepts applied to history explaining what happened to past civilizations and what that could mean for the present were thought-provoking. This may influence how you view and understand what is taking place around us all now. This may take you outside your comfort zone if you have been comfortably somnambulating recently.

What intrigued me first about this book was the title. "A Radical New Theory of Collapse." What exactly was Miss Costa writing about? I wasn't altogether sure but I wanted to find out. What I discovered WAS radical, was insightful, and yet was still written in an accessible style. I doubt that many of us have thought of the "cognitive threshold" that Miss Costa has told us we are approaching in our ever more complex world, OR that it will inevitably lead to collapse, but everyhting she says make perfect sense. It's downright scary as a matter of fact. I won't reveal here the tenets of her theory, but anyone and everyone in business, politics and the sciences should study this book and what she is saying......before it's too late. A great read!

Echo the other folks who speak of too much repetition. The supermemes are good markers for things to avoid in life. Unlike others, I like the ending - 2/3 of the book is factual or semi-factual evidence regarding the supermemes, but then she switches from the political to the personal and correctly avoids the impossible task she seems to have set out on - that of coming up with some universal advice for all these complicated situations she discusses. In the ending, she offers a hodge-podge of good ideas we can do as individuals to improve our own personal "evolution" of the tools we currently possess in our craniums. One of my confusions is the variety of ways she seems to deal with the word "evolution". Does it doom us or has our insight really evolved? Does personal development equate with evolution?Once I established the whole story of chimpanzees and monetary experiments was falsely attributed, emotionally embellished with other stories that are questionable, considering how she spun it into so many subsequent "conclusions", I became very suspicious of this book as any reliable source of objective science. Since she seems to be emphasizing analysis, patience and intellectual coordination, this is a sad thing to realize. The book has some very good ideas and principles to guide one along in this life, which are presented in a way that seems to tie things together neatly. Yet that is aided by manipulative restatements of reality. Does this bring "belief" into this presentation of alleged facts? Another reviewer said it put into words what they already believed. My bottom line is it is also an affirmation of some of my memes, but to the extent it tries to do so much more than that, I am left shaking my head.

This contains lots of speculation and little facts. The book has a huge bibliography but few direct identification of fact sources. Contains many errors of fact. The author must have found a long lost history written by the Mayan people or rulers, as well as that of the Roman Empire, as she makes definitive statements as to the cause of their collapse without any documentation. Your time will be better spent reading "Collapse"

This is a fascinating book. Unfortunately it is a bit outdated (talks about President Obama, and mentions Trump without the context of him as US president). And the author paints some very complicated subjects with a broad and simplistic brush, which offends my sensibilities as a scientist. For example, she simplistically proposes geoengineering to cool the Earth without regard to the complexity of gaining agreement from the myriad stakeholders as to what engineered climate would be the intended result (some countries are benefiting from global warming while others are suffering), or the reversibility of such measures in the event that they over-correct and toss us into another ice age.

Great book. Arrived as described.

My former neighbor wrote this. I have a very high opinion of her, she is a power house. I would give this 5 but it scares me because it seems prophetic. This is a good book for book club, lots to think and talk about. I really do recommend it.

After hearing Rebecca Costa on a radio interview I had to read her book. She is very interesting to listen to but that did not translate to her book. It was a slow read and although I can tell she put a great deal of work and research into the book (every author deserves great praise) her 250 pages could have been easily articulated in 70 pages or less. There were lots of redundancy and her great concepts were unfortunately surrounded by fluff. I also caught some contradictions that were a disappointment given my respect for her ideas in the book. I gave her three stars because of the fluff, redundancy and slow read. If not for those short comings I would have given her 5 stars for her incredible mind, her extensive research, and the many examples she used for this book.
